How the Calso Directory ranks
Every list is ranked by rating floor: a business's Google rating less a margin that shrinks as its reviews grow, so a high average from a handful of reviews does not outrank a slightly lower one from hundreds.
Rating floor
A 5.0 from four reviews and a 4.8 from four hundred are not the same evidence. A handful of reviews can sit well above or below where the next fifty would land, so the Calso Directory does not rank by the average alone.
Each business's rating floor is its Google rating less a margin of 1.645 divided by the square root of its review count. That is the lower end of a one-sided 95% range for the average, taking a spread of one star a review. The margin is large for a few reviews and small for many:
| Google rating | Reviews | Rating floor |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0 | 5 | 4.26 |
| 4.9 | 40 | 4.64 |
| 4.7 | 400 | 4.62 |
| 4.5 | 1,000 | 4.45 |
Lists are ordered by rating floor, highest first. Where two floors are equal, the business with more reviews goes first. The floor is printed beside every business so the order can be checked by hand.
What is listed
A business is listed when its Google listing has a rating from at least 5 reviews, is not marked closed, and can be placed in a city or town from its own address or map position. A business that has asked not to be listed is left out of this directory, and so is any copy of its listing. A list is only indexed and linked from the directory when it holds at least three businesses.
Where the figures come from
Ratings and review counts are Google's, as read in October 2026. Phone numbers, websites and opening hours are the ones each business lists on Google. Nothing is paid for: no business can buy a place or pay to move up, and no business is verified by Calso.
Corrections and removals
Use the form at the foot of the business's own page. A request is checked with the business first; a confirmed removal takes it off every page of the directory at the next update.
